The thought of watching something beautiful grow over the years is exciting, and can really bring your yard to life. With the wide range of greenery available for our growing zone (3B) in Saskatoon and area, the process of picking the right tree for your space can be difficult. We offer consultation on things such as;

  • Companion planting and what grows well together
  • Proximity to other plants and what the tree or shrub needs in terms of space
  • Soil testing and re-balancing to ensure optimal growing conditions

Companion Planting

There are three scenarios that can happen when planting two or more varieties of plants together. In some instances, they will get along and not harm each other. Or, under certain conditions, two plants which you thought would do well together will actually harm each other and stunt growth. The last possible outcome is that your chosen plants actually help each other thrive. This is what everyone hopes for, but not many people actually know why or how to achieve this. This is where we come in 306-400-5425. Our team of expert arborists have been assisting people plant different varieties of trees and shrubs together for years. If you're looking to add some colour to your yard with different flowering varieties, or simply fill in some blank spaces, we can help!

Proximity

When tree planting in Saskatoon, one needs to take the time to consider all the factors determining why you've chosen to plant something new. Are you looking for some shade in your yard? Maybe some relief from windy days or even something as simple as adding a bit of a privacy screen to your space. Others like to attract certain types of insects and wildlife.

Once you've decided the main reason for planting something new, we (306-400-5425) can look at the varieties of greenery that check the most boxes of your requirements. If it's shade you're after, because these trees generally grow quite tall, they will need to be spaced from your house at least 15-20 ft. Also keep in mind what kind of root system this new tree or shrub has. Tree root networks can be 3 times the size of the crown, and could very possibly cause structural issues with patios, driveways, sidewalks and many types of underground pipes.

With larger trees, you need to be careful with what is planted beside it. As your new tree starts to mature, it will likely win any competition for nutrients and water with smaller plants and shrubs around it. Another thing to be aware of is whats happening in your neighbours yards. The last thing you want is your beautiful new tree causing a riff between once friendly next door friends. This is why we usually don't suggest going with fruiting or littering varieties.

Soil

Determining what your soil type is before any new work commences can save a lot of hassle and frustration. We always recommend doing a nutrient and pH test, as well as checking soil type as a starting point of any new planting project.

Checking to see what your soil type is is usually quite easy. It will range from clay - silt - sand, or somewhere in between. The perfect combination of these soils is 20% clay, 40% silt, and 40% sand - usually referred to as 'loam'.

Testing for nutrient levels and pH can be done quite simply as well. There are multiple styles of DIY kits available at local gardening stores, which promise a variety of results. If getting a general understanding of what you're working with is enough for you, then these simple tests should suffice. On the other hand, if you are looking to maximize the growing potential of all your plants, you will want to know with precision, what your soil has going on.
